NRL superstar Reece Walsh has once again dazzled on the international stage, turning it on to help the Kangaroos sink New Zealand in a thrilling Rugby League World Cup opener.

Prior to the game, debate was raging over coach Kevin Walters’ decision to select Walsh ahead of Clive Churchill Medal winner James Tedesco … but Walsh certainly didn’t let his coach down.

Despite not playing in two months, the fullback put his body through hell, with 206 run metres, 9 tackle breaks, and a breathtaking, 80-metre try that left him gassed and spewing up his guts.

He also saved a certain New Zealand try with an inspirational tackle on Kalyn Ponga just before Ponga crossed the line.

In a game from the top shelf, the Kangaroos managed to have their noses in front at the right time, winning 24-22 in front of more than 41,000 at Allianz Stadium.

“What is it about these colors that brings out whatever that was tonight for you?” Walsh was asked by Channel 7 star presenter Mel McLaughlin.

“Yeah, it was a special one, man,” Walsh said on Seven.

“I think both teams are really passionate. Sitting there facing a haka for my first time. You know, I was pretty emotional, man.

“Thinking of my family, all my friends that helped me get here …

“And to step out with such an awesome bunch of boys … really tight (game), it was a really special one (and) an awesome way to start off your 2026 World Cup.

“It was an awesome game to be a part of.

“We’ve got an awesome team, and man, they’ve got an awesome team as well. Just to go out there and compete. You know, you’re against the best in the world, man, and I’m just glad we put on a show for the fans of both nations.

“And I think they should be really proud no matter the result tonight.”

Walsh was asked about his spectacular try and what happened in the aftermath.

“Oh my God, bro. I was stuffed, hey,” he said.

“Both my calves were gone. I was sitting there getting the cramps in my stomach, and then I thought I had it in me (to take the kick). I stood back there for a second, and I just needed to spew. So I let Latrell (Mitchell) take it.

“Honestly, I haven’t played in I think about nine weeks, so the calves were gone.

“My first skill session was I think Friday last week. So man, you know that’s a lot of credit to Kevvie for instilling the trust in me to get myself back here and give myself a shot.”

Not only was Walsh grateful for Walters’ faith, but he also lauded Tedesco.

“For what Teddy’s done for me this week, being able to sit there and ask some questions and learn. I’m sure that I’m going to take a lot out of tonight’s game to be able to rub shoulders with one of the best to ever do it in the fullback position,” he said.

“So I feel like I’m just really grateful, but just because we got that win tonight doesn’t mean any spots you know cemented.

“Like Kevvie said, everyone’s going to get an opportunity to represent their country and put their best foot forward. And you know, when Teddy gets his crack, I’m going to do whatever I can to to help him, and keep putting the Australian jersey in better step going forward.”

Roosters premiership coach Trent Robinson said Walsh’s performance “justified” Kevin Walters’ decision to play him in the opener over Tedesco.

Walsh was also full of praise for Kangaroos debutant Jack Bostock, and he also sent a classy message to Kalyn Ponga after the New Zealand No.1 suffered a suspected broken arm.

“(Bostock)was crazy tonight and without him making big plays, we wouldn’t be in the position that we were. So man, full credit to Bossy on debut. He should be really proud and his family should be really proud of him,” Walsh said on Seven.

“(And) it’s pretty special when you go up against special players like KP, you want to take on that challenge.

“He was massive for them tonight.

“I’m honestly really gutted that he looks to be injured there. That’s going to be one the fans are really going to miss in the tournament.
