The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notice to Everest after its hing was found to be misbranded and substandard.

Non-compliance was also detected in Everest’s egg curry masala, chicken masala and garam masala. FSSAI has separately issued warnings to Laljee Godhu and Company over alleged violations.

The action comes as FSSAI told the Supreme Court that it has proposed a new front-of-pack warning label for packaged foods. The bright red, hexagonal symbol would flag products containing excessive levels of sugar, salt or saturated fat.

The proposal was submitted days after a Supreme Court bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala reprimanded FSSAI and the government over delays in introducing front-of-pack warning labels.

The food industry has raised concerns over aspects of the proposed rules, with Coca-Cola and groups representing Nestle and PepsiCo among those opposing some of the measures.

Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, meanwhile, has urged food businesses to look beyond regulatory compliance and act more responsibly towards consumers.
