A video going viral on social media shows a man wearing a saffron scarf slapping another man and later forcing him to say “Jai Shree Ram.” Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “I am an Indian Hindu girl, and watching this video makes me feel ashamed of myself. If Muslims choose to take up arms now, they would have every right to do so. This is normal for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, @Uppolice Police fully support RSS Goons.”

India Today Fact Check found that the man being slapped in the video is not Muslim — he is Hindu. Also, the video is not from UP.

OUR PROBE

We reverse-searched frames of the viral video and found a news report published by ETV Bharat on November 8, 2025. According to the report, the incident took place in the Camp Chowk area of Hisar, Haryana.

The report said that a man named Ranbeer arrived at a non-vegetarian shop and started assaulting the shop owner. The victim was identified as Manu, a resident of Uttarakhand.

We also found another report published by Dainik Bhaskar on November 8, 2025. According to the report, after slapping the shopkeeper, Ranbeer introduced himself as a member of Bajrang Dal and continued assaulting Manu. The report further mentioned that the shopkeeper repeatedly told him that he was Hindu. However, despite this, he was forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram” slogans in an attempt to save himself.

We then tried to locate the non-vegetarian shop owner. We searched for non-vegetarian shops in Hisar’s Camp Chowk area and found a shop named “Manu Chicken Pakode.” After geolocating the shop, we found a phone number displayed on the shop’s signboard. However, when we called, the number was switched off.

We then contacted a nearby shop called “New Zaika Muradabadi Biryani.” Through them, we were able to speak with Manu directly.

FactCheck2

Manu confirmed his identity and told India Today Fact Check that he is Hindu. He said that on that Tuesday, he had opened the shop only to clean it. However, a few customers arrived in the evening, so he served them whatever food was available.

According to Manu, Ranbeer suddenly arrived at the shop and began assaulting him and recorded it on camera. Manu told him that he was Hindu, but Ranbeer did not listen and asked him to chant a religious slogan. Later, when the video went viral, the police took action and arrested Ranbeer.

Thus, it is clear that the viral claim is misleading.
