Socceroos fans stormed the barriers at Federation Square after the square reached capacity five minutes after opening for the massive clash with the USA on Saturday morning.
Fans breached one barrier bursting past security guards who could only look on helplessly. They were met by police and guard dogs.
The gates opened at 4am, and the area reached capacity at 4.05am. Fans were being redirected to AAMI Park.
Flares were smuggled inside and were set off during the national anthem, and the crowd booed every time an image of a US supporter appeared on the screen.
Fans had been queuing up from 2am to get in. They kept the party going despite the persistent rain and the USA going 2-0 up before half-time.
