Fremantle forward Pat Voss has sent a warning to semifinal opponents Geelong, declaring the Dockers “couldn’t be in a better headspace” ahead of the do-or-die final.
The Dockers’ season is on the line at Optus Stadium on Friday night when they face the Cats, with the winner keeping their premiership hopes alive to move into a preliminary final against Sydney.
Voss’ performance has been firmly in the spotlight after the disappointing qualifying defeat to Hawthorn. The key forward went goalless, while his opponent in James Sicily was arguably the best player on the ground.
Voss said the Dockers were looking forward to redemption against Geelong.
“A very tough week. Obviously, not playing the way we wanted to and losing like that. We gave ourselves a good chance finishing on top and getting to qualify for a (home) prelim,” Voss said.
“That performance and feeling like I had a significant impact on the performance of the team. It is very deflating and not ideal at all, but we’ve earned the right to a second opportunity, and we’ve got a chance against the Cats on Friday night, and I tell you what, the boys couldn’t be in a better headspace… I am looking forward to it.
“Initially it was a bit of a bin job. And now that we’ve got a lot better to give. We’ve got through the X’s and O’s since then and gone through what’s wrong, taken the learnings and we feel like we’re well placed for this Friday.”
Voss conceded the occasion may have got the better of him, but he had turned the mentality around and was ready to embrace the pressure.
“I was a bit nervous … I have done a fair bit of reflecting and thinking since then, and obviously gratitude is a massive part of it as well,” he said.
“As much as I thought the world was going to end after the game, I remember early the next day I thought, ‘If you’d told me two years ago I’d played my 50th game last night in a qualifying final against the Hawks, and it just wasn’t quite my night, but I absolutely copped it and all those sort of things, all the negatives and the positives, that come with it, I’d take it in an absolute heartbeat’.
“We’re so privileged to be in the position we’re in and to have another final. Privileged to have the pressure, privileged to run out there in front of 60,000, and for it all to be on the line. I absolutely cannot wait for Friday night.”
