A ghost hunter has explained what to do if you think your home is haunted.

Paranormal investigator Colin Browen – who hosts the Murder In America podcast and The Paranormal Files on YouTube – has spent more than a decade investigating potential hauntings and he’s adamant it’s not worth investing in expensive kit as it’s much more helpful to simply ask the spook questions.

During an appearance on ARC Maine, Colin explained: “For me it’s always the feeling that you get. You could build out an incredibly expensive ghost-hunting tool kit – I have every tool imaginable and we’ve used every single one of them for years but the biggest thing when it comes to a haunting is personal experience.

“So even if someone is out there listening to this and they believe they were living in a haunted property, you don’t have to invest in all the tech you see on TV.”

He went on to share the steps you should take to deal with a ghost, saying: “I would suggest sitting down and asking questions, asking for a response, because to me that’s when I receive the most intelligent, kind of frightening in a way, activity.

“It wasn’t when I was using these tools and these meters. It was more when I sat down and was very intentional and asked for a sign.”

Colin has previously shared the signs to watch out for if you think your house might be haunted and insisted that 99 per cent of paranormal activity usually has a rational explanation.

He told The Mirror US: “Most of the time, things that we believe might be paranormal have rational explanations. We experience this all the time during our paranormal investigations – most of the time, the things that go bump in the night are really outdated air conditioning systems or rodents in the walls. “However, it’s the one per cent of paranormal experiences and reports that are completely inexplicable, that defy all rational explanation, that fascinate me.

“If you believe your house is haunted, I recommend that you try first, before seeking any sort of paranormal treatment, to attempt to debunk what you are seeing or experiencing.”

He went on to add: “I can’t tell you how many people have shared stories with me over the last decade about the things that they’ve experienced in their own homes, and, most of the time, these stories revolve around noises that they hear – voices coming from other rooms, knocking in the walls, or footsteps from upper floors – and, having lived in a haunted house myself, I understand how frightening those experiences can be.”

Colin concluded: “You could spend $20,000 building out the best paranormal toolbox imaginable, with every sort of device possible – but, at the end of the day, I think that the best paranormal investigation device is ourselves – the human body.

“In order to really understand the paranormal, we have to understand how it affects us and each one of our senses. If you feel like something is wrong, usually, something is wrong – and you should always listen to your intuition, especially if you believe that you’re experiencing a haunting.”

Colin added that some of the best evidence to prove a haunting is real comes from personal experiences which are difficult to document scientifically such as “phantom smells”, “tingling sensations” and cold spots.
