Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde’s romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai continued its slow run at the box office on its second day, registering only a slight jump in collections. The David Dhawan directorial has struggled to convert its star cast power into stronger ticket sales, with Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Peddi continuing to dominate the box office, with Bandar also showing growth.

According to the trade website Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 7.25 crore nett on Saturday across 8,813 shows in India. Its total India gross collection stands at Rs 17.70 crore, while the India nett collection is pegged at Rs 14.75 crore. Overseas, the film grossed Rs 3 crore on its second day, taking its worldwide total to Rs 23.20 crore.

The film recorded an overall occupancy of 21.38 per cent on Saturday. Chennai registered the highest occupancy at 47 per cent across 49 shows, followed by Hyderabad with 31.8 per cent from 192 shows. Bengaluru reported 29 per cent occupancy across 219 shows, while Mumbai and Delhi-NCR recorded 24 per cent and 16.3 per cent occupancy, respectively.

At the box office, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is facing stiff competition from Peddi. The Ram Charan-starrer which has emerged as the bigger draw since its release and has already crossed Rs 190 crore worldwide.

The film is also trailing Varun Dhawan’s previous release, Border 2. As per Sacnilk, Border 2 had opened with Rs 30 crore and collected Rs 36.50 crore on its second day, placing it well ahead of the actor’s latest release.

IndiaToda.in’s review of the film reads, “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai doesn’t fail because it is loud, silly or outrageous. David Dhawan built an empire on those very qualities. It fails because it arrives convinced that audiences still consume comedy the same way they did three decades ago. They don’t..”

Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Ramesh Taurani, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai stars Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The ensemble cast includes Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Chunky Panday and Maniesh Paul, with special appearances by Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Pahwa, Kriti Sanon and Varun Sood. The film hit theatres on June 5.
