Shubman Gill has addressed whether Yashasvi Jaiswal has done enough to earn a place in India’s ODI squad for the England series, following his performances against Afghanistan.
Jaiswal returned to the ODI setup after around six months, stepping in after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury.
Jaiswal had a mixed outing in the series, getting out cheaply in the second ODI before bouncing back strongly in the third. He struck an unbeaten 110 at Chepauk, helping India secure a dominant nine-wicket win and complete a 3-0 series sweep.

Commenting on Jaiswal’s prospects, Gill said that player fitness will be a key factor in selection decisions. He also noted that strong performances across the squad have created a happy headache for the team management when it comes to finalising combinations for the England ODIs.
“We’ll see where everyone’s fitness is. If everyone is fit, like I said, the squad will be announced and, based on that, we’ll try to pick the best possible XI,” Gill said in the post-match press conference.

“It’s a good kind of headache to have when all your players are performing. I think the squad will be announced either tomorrow or in the next couple of days. We’ll see who’s in the squad, and then we’ll try to put out the best possible XI in England,” Gill said.
“We all know he’s a phenomenal player. It’s not easy for any player because, when everyone is available, he’s unfortunately the one who sometimes misses out.
“Since Virat bhai wasn’t available in this series, he got the opportunity to play a couple of games, and today he played really well. Hopefully, he’ll continue this form and keep grabbing the opportunities he gets,” Gill added.
HOW YASHASVI JAISWAL LIT UP CHEPAUK
Opening the batting alongside Rohit Sharma, he was part of a dominant 170-run partnership that completely blunted Afghanistan’s attack and laid the foundation for a comfortable victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Jaiswal began with positive intent, quickly settling into rhythm and putting away loose deliveries with authority. He brought up his half-century off just 38 balls, underlining his aggressive approach at the top of the order. As the innings progressed, he balanced risk and control effectively, rotating strike while continuing to find boundaries at regular intervals.
He reached his second ODI hundred off 83 balls, a milestone he celebrated with visible emotion after dancing down the track to Mohammad Nabi and launching the ball over extra cover.
His innings included a fluent mix of ground strokes and clean hitting against both pace and spin. Jaiswal finished in style, striking a towering six to seal the chase, capping off a commanding performance in India’s series-clinching win.
