Another impressive game from Lucas Herrington wasn’t enough to save Hull City in their League Cup clash with Premier League rivals Sunderland.
Morocco international Chemsdine Talbi made the difference as Sunderland scored a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) to reach the last 16 of the League Cup.
Herrington started for Hull City, and the 19-year-old Socceroo was unflappable in defence, showing his skills off both feet and frequently launching his side into attack.
However, Talbi chipped goalkeeper Dillon Phillips in the 71st minute in the only match of the evening between two top-flight sides fielding much-changed line-ups from their weekend league fixtures.
Despite the defeat, newly promoted Hull City remain undefeated after three rounds of the EPL, sitting third in the standings with two wins and a draw.
In other results, Crystal Palace beat Championship side Middlesbrough 3-0 in South London.
Bournemouth went one better at the Vitality Stadium and saw off second-tier opponents Lincoln City 4-0, with Ryan Christie scoring a hat-trick in their first competitive win under new manager Marco Rose.
It was a tough day in the Lincoln City goal for Australian keeper Joe Gauci, who is on loan from Premier League side Aston Villa.
Gauci faced 36 shots on his Lincoln debut, though quite a few of them were off-target or blocked.
Jorgen Strand Larsen scored headers in each half for Crystal Palace, with Daichi Kamada completing the scoring in the 72nd.
Newcastle United, the 2025 winners, left it late against second-tier Millwall in their third-round match, but went through 1-0 thanks to a deflected Joe Willock effort in the 81st minute at The Den.
Chelsea are at home to Leeds United on Wednesday (local time), with the remaining fixtures scheduled for next week.
