Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Water Board on Monday, October 26, cracked down on drinking water wastage, imposing a fine of Rs 20,000 on Paradise Hotel.

Officials from Division 16 of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) issued the fine while conducting inspections in the Khairatabad zone. It was found that the restaurant was misusing drinking water. Subsequently, HMWSSB officials advised its management to judiciously use the water and avoid any wastage.

Water Board officials have warned that strict action will be taken if any instances of water misuse are found.

Last week, data released by the state irrigation department showed that over half of Telangana’s 600-plus mandals are currently affected by drought, and in Hyderabad there is an acute drinking water shortage due to the effects caused by El Niño. Multiple areas across the capital city have reported major water shortages, with drinking water supplied only once every three or four days.

Earlier on October 18, the water board fined a pub at Jubilee Hills Road No 45 Rs 20,000 for wasting drinking water on washing its premises. The management of Fore-Fathers Pub was asked to pay the penalty, and its drinking water connection was disconnected. The HMWSSB also discontinued the water supply through tankers.
