Hours after being removed as White House Press Secretary after just five days in the role, Katie Zacharia praised US President Donald Trump’s leadership, describing him as a kind and gracious person. She also said it was an “honour” to work for him.

“President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. It was an honour to work for him,” Zacharia wrote on X.

Reaffirming her support for Trump’s Make America Great Again vision, Zacharia said no one could make America great the way Trump has and continues to.

“I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to,” she wrote.

Trump had earlier said he urged Zacharia to reconsider the position after she faced intense media scrutiny over her professional credentials and her first White House press briefing.

“I told her, I think you’re better off being happy,” Trump told reporters. “I want her to have a good life. I don’t want her to have a life like she’s led the last three days.”

He also recalled telling her, “Katie, do you need this? I don’t think you need this.” Trump said he believed she had been treated unfairly by the media and described the criticism as brutal.

QUESTIONS OVER CREDENTIALS, FIRST BRIEFING

Zacharia took over from Karoline Leavitt earlier this week. She began work on Monday and held her first press briefing the following day. The briefing lasted less than 15 minutes, with Zacharia taking questions from just three reporters.

Questions over her legal credentials soon added to the scrutiny. Zacharia had said she practised international transaction law “with all the appropriate credentials.” However, she acknowledged in a Fox News interview on Thursday that she had not passed the bar examination.

Trump dismissed suggestions that her bar exam record would have affected his decision to appoint her. “Well, I wasn’t hiring her to be a lawyer. I was hiring her to be a press secretary,” he said.

Zacharia’s exit leaves Trump without a permanent White House press secretary just over two weeks before the November midterm elections. Trump has said he is in no hurry to appoint a successor.
