For most Indians, bhindi is the vegetable that quietly sits in the kitchen waiting to become dinner. It is affordable, familiar and rarely the star of any conversation. But in an American supermarket, one Indian man discovered that the humble vegetable had undergone a dramatic rebranding, and apparently a massive salary hike.

The moment was captured by content creator Ashish Ahuja during a grocery run in the United States. While browsing the snack aisle, he stumbled upon something that instantly caught his attention: packets of crispy okra snacks.

At first glance, the product seemed ordinary enough. But when Ahuja looked at the price tag, he had to do a double take.

The small packet contained just 85 grams of fried okra and cost $6.50, roughly Rs 600.

For anyone who has watched their mother bargain over vegetables at the local market, the figure felt almost unbelievable.

Amused and slightly horrified, Ahuja began calculating what the snack would cost if bought by the kilogram. The answer only made things worse. By his estimate, a kilo of the crunchy bhindi snack would cost well over Rs 7,000.

In the video, he marvelled at how differently the same ingredient was being sold.

The vegetable that routinely appears in lunchboxes and dinner plates across India had been transformed into a premium supermarket snack thousands of kilometres away. A bit of seasoning, some stylish packaging and a trendy health-food label had seemingly elevated bhindi into an entirely different tax bracket.

The creator couldn’t resist poking fun at the transformation.

In his caption, he joked that bhindi had somehow become more expensive than a packet of chips and quipped that it seemed to be charging customers a “personality tax”.

The clip quickly resonated with viewers, many of whom were equally stunned by the price. Others pointed out that this isn’t uncommon in international markets, where everyday Indian ingredients are often repackaged, marketed as healthy alternatives and sold at a significant premium.

For Indians watching the video, however, the funniest part was seeing a vegetable known for causing arguments at the dinner table suddenly being treated like a gourmet snack.
