As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to fuel regional instability, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has alleged that Tehran went after his family and tried to assassinate one of his sons. He made the claim during an interview with Israel’s Channel 14 on Monday while discussing security arrangements for his family and other political figures ahead of the country’s elections.

“This is an unbelievable case. Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to murder him, tried to murder one of my sons,” Netanyahu said.

However, he did not identify which of his two sons was allegedly targeted or provide details about when or how the attempt took place. The Israeli Prime Minister also did not explain how authorities allegedly became aware of the reported attempt.

His comments came as questions were being raised over the security provided to political figures and members of Netanyahu’s family. The Israeli security agency Shin Bet has approved extended protection for Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, and their two sons.

NETANYAHU DEFENDS FAMILY SECURITY

Netanyahu raised the alleged threat while discussing the need for security protection for political leaders and their families during the election campaign.

“Is this part of the intelligence provided to you?” a Channel 14 reporter asked him.

“Iran tried to murder one of my sons. And this is why this promise (I am making) is more than a luxury – without it, they could succeed (in killing my son). People need to show some restraint, especially during an election campaign,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu has two sons, Yair and Avner. Yair, his elder son, has spent an extended period in Miami since 2024, while Avner, the younger son, has lived mainly in Israel.

The Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs approved extended personal protection for Sara Netanyahu, Yair and Avner in July, according to the reports. The security arrangements have previously attracted controversy, particularly in relation to Yair Netanyahu’s stay in the US and the cost of providing protection overseas.

Netanyahu has defended the arrangements, arguing that the threat to his family is serious enough to warrant continued protection.

“The security they (Netanyahu’s family) get is not a luxury,” he said.

He also called for appropriate security to be provided to political candidates amid the election campaign. The comments came during a wider discussion about reports that Shin Bet had declined to provide a security detail for Gadi Eisenkot, who is expected to contest the upcoming elections against Netanyahu. The claim comes against the backdrop of sustained tensions between Israel and Iran following the direct military confrontation between the two countries.
