At least four people, including two children, were killed in Israeli strikes and tank fire across Gaza on Monday, hospital officials said, as residents fled homes and businesses after evacuation warnings from the Israeli military. The attacks came a week after a US delegation asked Israel to scale down its attacks in Gaza.

Strikes were reported in central and southern Gaza as well as Gaza City, with residents seen running through rubble, mothers carrying children, and others moving away in wheelchairs or with canes. Smoke rose over parts of the territory, which has already been heavily damaged by the war.

In central Gaza, a strike hit a building in the Bureij refugee camp after an evacuation warning. According to Awda Hospital, one family was unable to get out in time and a four-year-old child was killed. His mother and sister were wounded. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the strike.

The Israeli military said it carried out strikes in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City and in Deir al-Balah after issuing warnings. It said it was targeting two Hamas weapons storage facilities inside mosques. The military did not provide evidence, but said the sites contained “dozens of Kalashnikov rifles, magazines and additional military equipment”.

In Deir al-Balah, an earlier Israeli strike on a tent killed a man, according to Al-Aqsa Hospital, where the body was taken. Israel’s military said it had killed a militant linked to Hamas’ special forces unit. In southern Gaza, a man was killed and five others were wounded in an Israeli strike in Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital. The same hospital said Israeli tank fire east of Khan Younis killed a 10-year-old girl. The Israeli military said it was not immediately commenting on the strike in Khan Younis and that it was not aware of the incident involving the child.

Israel has continued targeted killings in the week since a US delegation met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to try and move forward last year’s ceasefire deal. Last week, a person familiar with the meeting, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief journalists, said US negotiator Jared Kushner had asked Netanyahu to draw down Israel’s attacks in Gaza. Monday’s strikes left at least four dead across the territory, including two children, while more residents were forced to flee after fresh warnings.
