Jonathan Van Ness has been forced to rehome his dog following a “gut-wrenching” attack on his cat.
The 39-year-old star took to social media to reveal he and husband Mark Peacock have given their beloved pet pooch to New York City’s foster-based dog rescue organisation Muddy Paws Rescue, after a “devastating event” when the canine broke their cat Liza Meownelli’s jaw.
Speaking in an Instagram video, an emotional Jonathan said: “Our beloved dog George had a situation with Liza where they were trying to cross each other on the stairs.
“Liza was p***ed, and she gave him a little swat, and then George just kind of freaked out and went for her.
“He ended up breaking her jaw.”
The Queer Eye star told how George was “rough housing”, rather than trying to bite, Liza, but Jonathan “knew instantly” that if the couple’s feline friend survived the attack they wouldn’t be able to keep their dog.
He said: “I couldn’t tell what the immediate damage was until I got to Liza and I saw what I knew was immediately a very broken jaw.
“I just started scream-crying [and] howling for Mark. We got her to the emergency vet.
“I knew instantly that if she made it, we weren’t gonna be able to keep George.
“And thank God for the people at the Schwartzman Animal Hospital. They performed a literal miracle on her. I didn’t think she was gonna make it.”
Jonathan and Mark have had George for four years, and the hairstylist and podcast host said the incident “came completely out of the blue”.
He said: “If you would’ve told me that morning that we were gonna be rehoming George that night, I would’ve said you were crazy.
“All of the animals got along so well, for the most part, and this just came completely out of the blue.”
Jonathan also wrote on Instagram: “Pretty long family update. I want to say thank you @amcny Thank you to @muddypawsrescuenyc for helping us in such a hard time. This has been such a devastating event and I’m sharing to say for every animal family, its not easy, but Im so glad we can show up for these creatures + each other. (sic)”
