Amid the ongoing controversy over actor Kriti Sanon’s outfit for a Raksha Bandhan advertisement, Kareena Kapoor was asked about her own boundaries when it comes to what she would or wouldn’t wear on screen. The actor appeared hesitant to answer the question at the trailer launch of Daayra, prompting filmmaker Meghna Gulzar to step in.
Addressing the question, Meghna said an actor’s wardrobe should be decided according to the character and the director’s vision. “Uss film mein ek female ka ya ek male ka kya character hai uss hisab se unko dress kiya jayega. (In a film, an actor will be dressed according to the character they are playing, whether it is a woman or a man). It depends on the director. It is unfair to ask this to one actor,” she said.

The controversy erupted after a jewellery brand, GIVA, released a Raksha Bandhan advertisement featuring Kriti Sanon. In the campaign, Kriti was seen celebrating the festival with her brother and tying a rakhi to their pet dog. She wore an Indo-Western ensemble comprising a bralette-style blouse, a cape, and a draped skirt.
While the advertisement aimed to offer a contemporary spin on Raksha Bandhan, it drew criticism from some social media users, who questioned the Cocktail 2 actor’s outfit and felt it was inappropriate for a festival traditionally associated with family and cultural values.
Kangana Ranaut also took a swipe at the campaign on her Instagram Stories. “It’s a wonderful time to be a woman. Our closets are full of a variety of clothes, today’s woman is a global woman. From cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez, from all the options that are available to us today, why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha the advert looks intentionally creepy!” she wrote.
Kriti later hit back at the criticism and defended the message behind the campaign. She said the significance of festivals lies in the emotions and traditions attached to them, rather than in what a woman chooses to wear.
The ad was later pulled, and the founder, Ishendra Agarwal, shared a clarification on Instagram after the brand faced backlash over its decision to withdraw the advertisement. Addressing the controversy, he said there was a perception that the brand had distanced itself from the campaign and its message following the criticism. However, Agarwal stressed that the brand’s belief in the campaign’s intent “remains unchanged.”
Meanwhile, also starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Daayra is slated to release in theatres on September 18.
