A labourer was found dead beneath a mound of soil at a road construction site in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district on Thursday. The incident occurred near a four-lane road, which was under construction. The body was discovered when workers were levelling soil on a divider. During the work, onlookers spotted a hand sticking out from the pile of earth, prompting them to alert the police.

Initially, bystanders thought it might be a piece of cloth or some other object buried under the soil. However, a closer inspection raised suspicions, prompting them to alert the police. Officers rushed to the spot and launched a recovery operation.

With the help of a backhoe loader and labourers, the soil was removed, revealing the body of a man buried underneath. News of the discovery quickly spread, drawing a large crowd to the site.

Police also recovered a bag lying near the body. It contained food items, a pouch of country liquor, green chillies, a chillum, a mobile charger and a shawl. Based on the items found, investigators suspect the man may have spent the night at the site and had been sleeping on the divider when the incident occurred.

According to local residents, dumpers carrying soil had been operating in the area late at night. It is suspected that the drivers were unaware that someone was sleeping on the divider and may have accidentally dumped soil directly on him, causing him to suffocate under the debris. Police, however, said all angles are being investigated.

A few hours after the body was recovered, a woman arrived at the site with her two children and identified the deceased as her husband, Mintu, a native of Deoria district. His wife, Neeta Devi, said he had been working as a labourer and had left home around 10 days ago for road construction work in the Jungle Kaudia area.

Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. Gulriha Station House Officer Jagdish Pal said further action would be taken based on the report and findings of the investigation.
