What time does the trade period close?

By Chris De Silva

What is the official time of close for trades- and what is the absolute minimum time required to get the paperwork done and lodged?

– Tbags

The close of time is 7:30pm AEST.

As we’ve seen in previous years, the rush to get paperwork lodged can be a little intense at the deadline.

I believe that as long as you’re in line to lodge the paperwork by 7:30 then that’s good enough for the AFL.

I don’t think any of these teams would want to leave things that late though!

Will Jack Viney be an Eagle?

West Coast Viney?

– Phil

I do think the Jack Viney to West Coast move will get done by the deadline tonight.

West Coast have been trying to treat this move as a separate one to the Trent Rivers play. That is likely because they feel Viney is worth a throwaway late pick given his age and the fact the Dees want him out, whereas the Demons are trying to package Viney and Rivers together to get pick 23 off West Coast.

The Eagles don’t want to give up pick 23, and so we’re at a logjam. There is a chance therefore that Viney happens and Rivers doesn’t. Lots of discussion to be had in the next five hours.

Will Miers stay or go?

By Chris De Silva

What are the chances of miers getting traded, becuase i thought his manager said he is staying.

– Lachlan

Today’s news is definitely interesting consider Miers’s manager Liam Pickering said he was definitely going to remain a Cat the other day.

It’s hard to talk in absolutes in this business, and I do feel like there has been a bit of posturing in Pickering’s comments on Miers all trade period.

The truth is that he is available for the right price. It is just a question of whether any team is willing to pay Geelong’s right price.

I’d say that as things stand, he’s probably more likely to remain at Geelong than leave, but stranger things have happened.

What are the vibes like at Docklands right now?

By Chris De Silva

Afternoon Chris, whats the vibe feeling like right now at Marvel? Personally a big fan of deadline days, from the AFL’s to the Premier leagues, and just trying to remotely gauge the extent of anticipation in AFL house right now. That behind the scenes video from the AFL with Twomey from 2025 made for fantastic viewing, I imagine its not quite as tense as that, but curious nonetheless!

– O.M

It’s pretty calm to be honest, O.M.

But it’ll be interesting to watch things heat up as the day progresses.

A lot of the action happens in that hallway between the war rooms though, which unfortunately I’ve not got eyes on from my vantage point.

The three-time reigning premiers are here

By Chris De Silva

Brisbane rolling through now, with list boss Dom Ambrogio in a particular hurry to get to the Lions war room with a couple of deals to get done.

Footy boss Danny Daly in less of a hurry as he stops to have a chat with one of the staffers around today.

Some more arrivals at Docklands

By Chris De Silva

The Hawks and Crows have also made their way in.

I must say it looks incredibly weird seeing Jarryd Roughead kitted out in Crows gear, but here we are.

A bit of business to do for both camps in the form of Josh Goater and Nick Murray.

What do we make of Richmond’s deal for pick 5?

By Chris De Silva

Have to say I’m pretty high on the Richmond trade for Pick 5 from a fan perspective. Next year’s draft is compromised with Tasmania and a number of top picks already being signed, so it makes sense to get out and instead recruit hard this year.

We’ve already had a number of high draft picks over the last few years and the focus should start being on getting them more experience (and less injured).

Also with Mansell already almost certain to join Tasmania, and Nank and Hopper two of their other rumoured targets, odds are that Richmond will get some picks back in the draft either way.

– Adam

Certainly seems like that’s the thought process behind Richmond doing this deal.

The Tigers must really like someone in this year’s top 10, and must rate next year’s class as pretty diluted to want to put away what could be a top five pick.

It’s a good point you make about the Tigers potentially trading back into next year’s draft as well using veteran players.

The trade period will heat up next year as clubs look to get their hands on those picks Tassie has to trade.

The Swans brass is here now

By Chris De Silva

Swans list boss Chris Keane is the first of the Sydney cohort to make their way in.

A big point of business done with Nick Blakey yesterday.

Do the Swans have something else in the offing for today?

The Hawthorn pecking order

By Dean Bilton

Story was back then, depending on Calsher Dears movement. Dear stays Max Ramsden goes and vice versa. (Dear goes)Haven’t heard boo about Ramsden

I have been a little surprised too that there has been no word at all about Max Ramsden.

Though I think in the end, once Calsher Dear signed on, it was Aidan Schubert who fell out the bottom of that pecking order, rather than Ramsden. The Hawks probably didn’t want to lose either Dear or Schubert, but at least got something half-decent back from the Suns for Schubert.

John Longmire is in the building as a Bomber!

By Chris De Silva

We’ve got our first look at John Longmire in action for the Bombers.

Longmire’s accompanied by Essendon coach Mark McVeigh as the Bombers war room begins to fill up.

McVeigh is so far the only senior coach I’ve seen make their way in.

Our man on the ground putting in work

By Dean Bilton

I’m sure the whole blog will be disappointed in you Dean and Chris if you’re not stalking the halls a lá Tom Petroro last year

– Sam

Don’t worry, if things look like they’re getting tetchy we’ll be telling Chris to put a hard tag on one of these player agents or list bosses. He’s the Oisin Mullin of our team.

Carlton’s list boss makes his way in

By Chris De Silva

Can’t imagine it’ll be too busy of a deadline day for the Blues, but nonetheless, their football boss Chris Davies has just made his way into Docklands.

The Blues unveiled Lachie Whitfield earlier today, a player who shapes up as a genuine difference-maker for 2027.

The Bombers are in the building!

By Chris De Silva

Essendon CEO Tim Roberts is flanked by the newly-appointed Bombers head of football operations, Craig Vozzo.

The Dons will be pretty central to today’s action as they look for a way to pry Keidean Coleman out of Brisbane.

Will the Lions budge on their stance?

Lenny leads the Saints into the building

By Chris De Silva

St Kilda making its way into Docklands now with its football boss Lenny Hayes accompanied by a few other staffers.

The Saints have a couple of high picks to play with, could we see them throw a spanner in the works ahead of the deadline?

The Kangaroos and Magpies brass arrive

By Chris De Silva

Brady Rawlings is in the building 24 hours after swinging one of the biggest trades in North Melbourne’s history.

The Kangaroos brass is followed by Collingwood’s cohort, with the Pies recruitment manager Shane O’Bree in tow.

We’ll have a few of the other teams rolling in over the next few minutes you’d think.

Do the Bombers stich up the Blues at the draft?

By Chris De Silva

Is there any chance that Essendon take Cody Walker at pick 1 now that Carlton don’t have the points to match?

– JM

It doesn’t seem like they will, JM.

All we know at this stage is that Essendon will place a bid on Dougie Cochrane at No.1, with Port telling us that at the start of the trade period.

It remains unclear whether the Dons would follow that up with an immediate bid on Walker.

I’d say the more likely scenario is that Richmond bids on them with their first pick.

The Bombers will be mindful of catching any rivals offside because they’ve got their own gun father-son prospect coming through in next year’s draft.

THE TRADES DON’T SLEEP!

By Chris De Silva

Interesting side note Dean / Chris.Your fame spread to the business blog this morning by some questioning the late start to the footy blog ! Poor Katie Silver was a bit nonplussed.

– Phillip

Sorry, Katie.

I promise our fans will stop bothering you after 7:30pm this evening.
