Shoppers may have had their Mastercard digital payments declined due to a “global” issue that led to an Australian bank warning its customers.
The Commonwealth Bank issued an alert online that Mastercard card transactions were “declining” on Saturday afternoon.
“Mastercard card payments are being declined due to a global Mastercard issue,” the bank said in the alert.
It urged shoppers not to use tap-and-go and instead insert their card and select ‘savings’ to make payments via eftpos.
The bank told customers ATM and other bank services were unaffected.
A CommBank spokeswoman told AAP late on Saturday afternoon the issue had been restored.
“We apologise and appreciate your patience,” she said.
Mastercard said the issue was caused by a scheduled system update.
“The situation has been resolved and all systems are working as normal,” a spokeswoman said.
More than 2000 Australians reported issues with Mastercard to Downdetector at 2pm AEST but that number dropped to 172 just before 5pm.
Funds transfer and mobile banking affected the most customers, followed by app issues, according to the site.
