Michael Douglas has offered a rare glimpse inside his sprawling Mediterranean estate, revealing how a historic Spanish mansion he once tried to sell has become a cherished retreat for him and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The Oscar-winning actor, 82, and Catherine, 57, divide their time between their property on the Spanish island of Mallorca and homes in New York, with Michael describing the 190-acre S’Estaca estate in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
The mansion, which dates back to the 19th century, was purchased by Michael and his first wife, Diandra Luker, in 1990 for $3.5 million before becoming the subject of a lengthy and unsuccessful attempt to sell it.
Michael said: “Our Mallorca house dates to 1867 and sits on 190 acres.”
He added: “We love being surrounded by nature and our serene view and privacy.”
The actor, whose films include Wall Street, Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct, also described some of the more personal features of the property, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.
Among his favourite places is a fuchsia armchair positioned beside an open window facing the water.
Michael also revealed the mansion’s wine cellar contains a TrackMan golf simulator, allowing him to practise his swing indoors.
The same space doubles as a home cinema, providing another entertainment area within the extensive property.
According to Architectural Digest, S’Estaca includes five apartments and two cottages, as well as a library, games room, outdoor kitchen and heated swimming pool.
The estate has reportedly hosted several Hollywood stars over the years, including Tom Cruise, 64, Nicole Kidman, 59, Michelle Pfeiffer, 68, and Jack Nicholson, 89.
Michael originally bought the property with Diandra, with whom he shares his eldest son, Cameron Douglas, 47.
Following the couple’s divorce, the estate became part of an unusual arrangement under which Michael and Diandra each spent six months of the year at the property.
Speaking to the Mallorcan newspaper Última Hora in 2021, Michael acknowledged the difficulties created by the arrangement.
He said: “It was very uncomfortable to share the house of S’Estaca with my ex-wife, Diandra.”
Michael added: “Six months each was not a pleasant thing for anyone.”
The actor subsequently attempted to sell the property, putting it on the market for $60 million in 2014.
The mansion remained unsold for several years, prompting Michael to personally narrate a promotional video in 2019.
In the recording, he explained his decision to part with the historic residence.
Michael said: “My life has taken a new course.”
He continued: “And now it’s time for me to let someone else enjoy the privilege and adventure of owning S’Estaca.”
The sale never materialised, however, and Michael and Catherine subsequently secured full ownership of S’Estaca, allowing them to retain the property as a family residence.
The couple, who married in 2000, have two children together – Dylan Douglas, 26, and Carys Douglas, 23 – and have regularly spent time in Mallorca.
Michael has developed a longstanding connection with the island, which he described as his second home during an appearance at the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Festival in 2024.
The actor received the Master of Cinema award from Queen Letizia of Spain during the event, which celebrated his contribution to international filmmaking.
His attachment to the estate has continued alongside a Hollywood career spanning more than five decades.
Michael won an Academy Award for his portrayal of ruthless financier Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s 1987 drama Wall Street, a role he reprised in the 2010 sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
He also starred in Romancing the Stone, The Game, The American President and Falling Down, and portrayed Liberace in the television film Behind the Candelabra.
More recently, Michael played Hank Pym in Marvel’s Ant-Man films and Benjamin Franklin in the historical television drama Franklin.
Catherine has similarly maintained a successful acting career, winning an Academy Award for her performance as Velma Kelly in the 2002 musical Chicago.
Her other prominent films include The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment, Traffic and Ocean’s Twelve.
The Welsh actress has also reached a younger television audience through her portrayal of Morticia Addams in Netflix’s supernatural comedy-drama Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, 24, as her daughter Wednesday Addams.
Catherine returned to the role for the show’s second season, which was released in 2025.
