Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Wednesday filed an FIR with the Delhi Police against 63 social media handles for circulating misleading and factually incorrect posts about waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), including claims that airport operations had been disrupted.

The action follows heavy rainfall in Delhi on September 4, which led to temporary water accumulation at the arrival forecourt of Terminal 3. According to DIAL, the airport received around 72.2 mm of rain in three hours between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm, resulting in localised water accumulation.

DIAL said its teams responded immediately and cleared the accumulated water within 20 minutes, while airport operations continued safely and without disruption.

“While there was temporary water accumulation in the Terminal 3 arrival forecourt following an episode of intense rainfall, airport operations were not affected, and the situation was resolved within 20 minutes,” the spokesperson said.

Soon after the incident, however, several posts and videos began circulating on social media, allegedly exaggerating the extent of waterlogging at the airport and falsely claiming that operations had been shut down.

DIAL also cited an instance in which an old video showing waterlogging at Dubai Airport was circulated as footage from Delhi Airport.

The airport operator said the circulation of such content was an attempt to create “public mischief”, spread misinformation, damage the reputation of a “critical public utility service” and cause unnecessary concern among passengers.

In a statement on Wednesday, DIAL said it had approached the Delhi Police against the 63 social media handles over the circulation of the allegedly misleading content.

The airport further alleged that the circulation of misleading content by certain social media handles appeared to be a “deliberate attempt” to create public mischief, damage the reputation of a public utility service and generate “unwarranted concerns” among passengers.
