Remembering Nana Patekar, a close associate told India Today that the actor would celebrate Ganpati at his farmhouse and personally feed everyone with his hands. He would also regularly invite people to his home and make them feel welcome.

He added that Nana’s legacy would be kept alive through the work of the Naam Foundation. “We will keep Nana alive through our work with the Naam Foundation. Nobody will feel his absence. Through our work, we will keep him alive,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said that veteran actor Nana Patekar’s last rites would be performed with full state honours.

“Considering the unparalleled contribution of actor Nana Patekar to Marathi plays as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema, we have decided to conduct his last rites with full state honours,” the minister wrote on X.

Speaking to the media, he added, “The departure of Nana Patekar ji is a profound loss for the world of art. Emerging from the lanes of Yeola, he carved out his identity in Marathi theatre, Marathi and Hindi cinema through the strength of his talent and perseverance. On his passing, heartfelt condolences from me, from the Government of Maharashtra, and from the Department of Cultural Affairs.”

Patekar died at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, in the early hours of Thursday. He was 75.

The actor was found unconscious at his apartment and was taken to a private hospital. Senior doctor Dr Shekhar Salkar said Patekar was administered CPR for around 45 minutes but could not be revived. He was declared dead at 5.20 am.

According to Salkar, a friend of Patekar told doctors that the actor had messaged him around 3.30 am saying he was not feeling well. The friend saw the message around 4 am and rushed to the actor’s residence, where Patekar was living with a caretaker.

The caretaker contacted the hospital, following which an ambulance was sent to the residence. The actor’s treatment began in the ambulance itself, the doctor said.

Patekar’s body was later sent to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim for a postmortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. A medico-legal case has also been registered.
