The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the MBBS seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27, adding 13,636 seats across medical colleges in India. With the latest revision, the total number of approved MBBS seats has increased to 1,40,664 across 839 medical colleges, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs).
The revised seat matrix was notified by the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on September 22. The updated figures are relevant for NEET UG 2026 counselling, as they reflect the latest approved intake capacity of medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic session.

NMC ADDS 13,636 MORE MBBS SEATS
According to the revised matrix, 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed, while 13,636 seats have been increased across government and private medical colleges. The total includes 64,121 seats in government medical colleges and 76,543 seats in private medical colleges.
The revised matrix covers 839 medical colleges, comprising 447 government and 392 private institutions. It also includes 3,850 MBBS seats from 41 newly established medical colleges. Of these new colleges, 13 are government institutions accounting for 850 seats, while 28 are private colleges accounting for 3,000 seats.
STATES WITH HIGHEST INCREASE IN MBBS SEATS
Among states, Karnataka recorded the highest increase in MBBS seats at 1,650, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,250 seats, Uttar Pradesh with 1,200, Rajasthan with 1,100 and Telangana with 1,060.
The NMC’s latest revision incorporates permissions granted for new medical colleges as well as increases in the annual intake capacity of existing institutions. These approvals were made through the relevant regulatory and appeal processes.
The commission has also directed medical colleges to verify the details in the revised seat matrix and report any discrepancies or omissions to MARB for examination.
The NMC has clarified that the current seat matrix may be revised further based on decisions of the relevant appeal committees or other competent authorities.
For NEET UG 2026 candidates, the revised matrix provides the latest approved seat figures for the 2026-27 admission cycle. Candidates participating in counselling should refer to the latest NMC-approved seat matrix while checking college-wise and state-wise MBBS seats.
