A one-day-old baby girl was allegedly strangled to death inside the SNCU ward of a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh, with the postmortem confirming that her death was not natural. Police are now questioning her mother and grandmother, who were the only people present near the baby when the incident took place.
The shocking incident came to light at Ashoknagar District Hospital after the newborn, who was admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) following her birth, was found unresponsive on Saturday afternoon.

The baby was born to Bhavana, a resident of Sakra village in Chanderi, late at night. She was shifted to the SNCU after birth.
According to Civil Surgeon Dr BL Tagore, the mother told doctors that she had breastfed the baby, after which the newborn was found unconscious.
When doctors examined her, they found deep blue-red marks around her neck and blood coming from her mouth. The baby was declared dead, and a postmortem was conducted.
The postmortem report confirmed that the baby had been strangled, establishing that it was a case of murder.
The newborn was the third daughter in the family.
FAMILY MEMBERS UNDER POLICE SCRUTINY
At the time of the incident, only the baby’s mother and grandmother were present near her in the ward, according to police.
Investigators have found no indication so far that an unidentified outsider entered the ward. This has turned the focus of the investigation towards the family members who were present there.
The mother and grandmother are being questioned as police try to establish what happened between the time the baby was fed and when she was found unconscious.
NO CCTV CAMERA INSIDE SNCU
The investigation has been complicated by the absence of CCTV cameras inside the SNCU ward.
Police are now examining footage from cameras installed in the hospital corridors and surrounding areas to find out whether anyone entered or left the area around the time of the baby’s death.
The police are continuing to question the family and examine available CCTV footage as they try to identify the person responsible for the newborn’s death.
