Actor Vijay Deverakonda weighed in on the trolling aimed at his wife, Rashmika Mandanna, defending her personality after she was trolled for ‘overacting’ for being openly kind and positive. During a light-hearted conversation ahead of their upcoming film Ranabaali, Rashmika said she would not change who she is simply because some people interpret her behaviour differently.
Speaking to Keerthika Govindhasamy on her YouTube channel, Rashmika was asked about being trolled for the way she behaves. Addressing criticism that has seen her kindness dismissed as ‘overacting’, the actor said she sees no reason to change herself to please others.

“Personally, I feel that kindness is not weakness, and I am someone who wants to be kind because there are a lot of negative feelings that are going around. I want to believe in kindness and bring some kind of positivity. Even if people call that overacting, it’s fine,” Rashmika said.
She added that being kind comes naturally to her and that she does not see it as something she needs to justify.
“Not everyone is everyone’s cup of tea. I choose to be like this, and I am very happy being like this because this is just me. I don’t have to pretend to do this; this is real. I can’t fake it to make someone happy,” she said, adding that her personality keeps her family, friends and well-wishers happy.
Vijay, who was part of the conversation, also addressed the larger culture of trolling and how public perceptions about actors and politicians can be manufactured online.
“A lot of the trolling across politicians and actors is manufactured. You can only have feelings for someone when you have met them or spent some time with them. When you haven’t even met the person, how can you have such a strong opinion on their personality?” he said.
According to Vijay, social media has made it easier to create and amplify narratives around public figures. “It comes from manufacturing when a section decides that we want to create an opinion about someone. In the era of social media, it’s very easy to have 15 accounts. So, when someone manufactures that opinion, there’s a machinery that works to set that narrative,” he added.
What is Ranabaali about?
Ranabaali marks Vijay and Rashmika’s latest collaboration and is set against the backdrop of the 19th century. The film draws inspiration from the Great Madras famine that unfolded between 1854 and 1878 and is mounted as a large-scale action drama centred on resistance against colonial oppression.
Rashmika plays Jayamma, a pivotal character in the story, while international actor Arnold Vosloo plays Sir Theodore Hector. The film’s music has been composed by Ajay-Atul.
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali is set to release on October 16. It is expected to be released in multiple languages and is among the most anticipated films of the year.
