Ollie Robinson stole the show on Day 1 of the Lord’s Test, putting England in a dominant position against New Zealand. After Kyle Jamieson took a five-wicket haul to help the Kiwis bowl England out for 140, Robinson brought England firmly back into the contest with his incisive burst.
The opening day at the Home of Cricket was defined by relentless seam bowling, dramatic momentum swings, and repeated interruptions from rain and bad light. Only around 59 overs were possible across the day, but the action was packed with intensity as wickets tumbled at regular intervals in challenging batting conditions.

After his memorable comeback, Robinson said, “Really special, can’t put it into words. Feels a bit surreal. Amazing couple of hours, but so good to be back. There were doubts, but so good to be back in, to have the support of everyone.”
“I couldn’t hear much, I was in a daze. The crowd was amazing, it was incredible. Was just trying to wobble it today. The pitch reacted better to that. I got a couple of umpires calls, which sometimes don’t go your way,” Robinson added.
BROOK CARRIES ENGLAND
England, batting first after New Zealand won the toss and chose to field, were bowled out for 140 in 39.4 overs. Harry Brook provided the standout resistance with a brisk 56 off 71 balls, striking 10 boundaries in a counter-attacking innings that briefly lifted England out of trouble during their collapse.
However, the rest of the batting lineup struggled under testing seam and swing conditions. Jamieson led the New Zealand attack with figures of 14-0-62-5, well supported by Nathan Smith and Will O’Rourke, as England lost wickets at regular intervals. Joe Root and Ben Stokes failed to make an impact, while Jamie Smith was bowled while shouldering arms to a Jamieson delivery on a surface offering significant movement.
ROBINSON RUNS THROUGH KIWIS
New Zealand’s reply began in catastrophic fashion. Gus Atkinson struck early, but it was Ollie Robinson who delivered the defining spell of the innings, ripping through the top order with remarkable intensity. In his very first over, he removed Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Rachin Ravindra, leaving New Zealand reeling at 2 for 3 in just two overs.
Thereafter, Gus Atkinson took the wicket of Tom Latham, after which Josh Tongue dismissed Tom Blundell, as New Zealand ended the day at 61 for six. Glenn Phillips, however, showed some resistance, remaining unbeaten on 31 off 34 balls.
Going into the second day, Phillips will hold the key as New Zealand look to reduce the deficit. England, on the other hand, will aim to wrap up the innings quickly and keep the pressure firmly on the visitors.
