Digital payments platform PayPal has reportedly conducted a major round of layoffs in India. The company is said to have fired 600 employees, or roughly 10 per cent of its Indian workforce. This move comes at a time when PayPal is going through a global restructuring with similar cuts in other regions.
As per a report from Moneycontrol, PayPal has cut around 600 jobs in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad across several teams including technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance. PayPal is said to have had just over 6,000 workers in India before this round of layoffs.

A separate report from BusinessLine claims that as many as 25 per cent of PayPal’s Indian workforce – about 1500 workers – may be affected by the end of the restructuring.
Employees say PayPal fired them on call
According to the report, PayPal fired employees on a call without giving a prior notice about this decision. “We didn’t get any prior notice. We got an invite to join a call on Monday morning (August 31) and there were many employees on it from across offices in India,” an impacted employee said, as cited in the report. “We were informed that we would be let go. Right after the call, our access was immediately revoked.”
The employee added, “After that we only got an off-boarding email informing about the further process. We are getting some job assistance and were promised one month’s salary as severance pay. But, we are yet to hear back on that and the full and final settlement.” Another employee reportedly said that they received a direct email on August 31 saying they had been fired.
PayPal is laying off workers globally
The layoffs in India come amid a wider restructuring at PayPal. Earlier this year, PayPal was reported to have planned a multi-year plan that would lead to 20 per cent job cuts globally. PayPal had about 23,800 employees globally as of December 31, 2025, which means it would affect about 4,760 roles.
As per reports, PayPal is conducting layoffs in phases, beginning in the Asia-Pacific region, including India, followed by meetings with affected employees across the US, Europe, the Middle East and Africa on Monday.
In Ireland, reports say, about 164 employees were laid off on the same day, which was about 12 per cent of PayPal’s headcount in the country. The company has also reportedly fired 25 per cent of its workforce in Israel, or about 70 workers.
The company said in May this year that it aimed to deliver at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings over the same period.
PayPal is far from the only company that is conducting layoffs. On Wednesday, Uber announced plans to cut 3,300 jobs globally, with the savings to be invested into new tech, such as self-driving cars. Oracle, too, could fire around 10,000 workers soon, despite having laid off 32,000 workers globally earlier this year.
Globally, over 1,28,000 tech roles have been cut this year alone, as per layoffs.fyi. An increase from about 1,22,000 job cuts in all of last year.
