Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to US Vice President JD Vance over the phone and discussed ways to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas.

PM Modi also congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the birth of their son and conveyed his best wishes to the family. Further details of the conversation were not immediately available.

The phone call came days after a US lawmaker raised concerns over proposed amendments to India’s laws governing foreign donations received by NGOs, trusts, educational institutions and religious organisations, warning that the move could have implications for bilateral ties.

US Congressman Riley Moore on Tuesday alleged that the proposed changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) could allow the Indian government to take over churches and religious charities, calling the move a “clear attack against Christians.”

Following Moore’s remarks, the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said legislative matters were India’s internal affairs, while noting that several countries, including the United States, have laws regulating foreign funding.

Interestingly, Vance’s last publicly known phone call with PM Modi was in May 2025, during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, a conversation the Prime Minister later disclosed in the Lok Sabha.

Modi told the House that he had noticed around four missed calls from the US Vice President and returned the call. According to the Prime Minister, Vance warned him that Pakistan was planning a major attack on India.

PM Modi said he responded by telling Vance, “Our response will be even stronger.”

PM MODI CONGRATULATES VANCE FAMILY

PM Modi also congratulated Vance and his wife on the birth of their son.

The US Vice President and his wife recently welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, who was born at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

Announcing the birth on X, Vance said Usha and the baby were “happy and healthy” and that their other children were overjoyed to meet their younger brother.

The birth was also historically significant, since it was the first time in over 150 years that a sitting US Vice President welcomed a child.
