Port Adelaide have kept their slim AFLW finals hopes alive with their biggest win of the season, as they powered past a goalless and toothless Collingwood.
Needing victories in their last two games – and other results to go their way – Port (5-6) were untroubled in winning 8.4 (52) to 0.4 (4) at Alberton Oval.
The victory dragged them level on points with eighth-placed Fremantle, along with Adelaide and Hawthorn, who all have a game in hand and lead Port on percentage.
Compounding a miserable week in which they learned captain Ruby Schleicher is returning to her native Western Australia, Collingwood kicked their lowest-ever AFLW score by three points.
The 48-point winning margin easily eclipsed Port’s previous best this season of 21 and they equalled their biggest team score of the campaign.
“Such a relief to get a win,” retiring Port captain Justine Mules-Robinson told broadcasters after what was her final match at Alberton.
“We wanted to be bold with our offence and we definitely displayed that today.”
Port kicked six goals from turnovers and moved and used the ball much better than the hapless Pies (1-10).
Midfielder Abbey Dowrick accumulated 26 disposals, eight tackles, five clearances and a game-high 437m for the Power.
Gemma Houghton kicked two goals and grabbed three marks inside-50, while Matilda Scholz, Shineah Goody and Teagan Germech – who nabbed 10 intercept possessions – were other strong performers for Port.
Collingwood won the hitouts and clearances, but were unable to turn their strong stoppage work into goals.
They trailed 18-0 and 32-1 at the first two breaks, with a rushed behind providing their only first-half score.
The Pies did not kick a point of their own until almost halfway through the third quarter, when Ash Centra and Carly Remmos each tallied a behind within a few seconds.
Imogen Trengove missed a glorious chance to notch a goal for Collingwood in the final quarter, running into open goals only to kick a behind.
Tarni White and Centra were among the best for the Pies, who suffered a fourth straight loss.
