Fresh signs of public anger against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders emerged on Saturday night after eggs were allegedly hurled at senior TMC MLA Madan Mitra in West Bengal’s Kamarhati constituency.
The incident took place in the Ariadaha area, where a group of local residents reportedly staged a protest while the MLA was visiting the locality following reports of unrest. According to initial reports, protesters targeted Mitra’s vehicle with eggs, forcing him to leave the area. While the TMC leader later claimed that he was not inside the vehicle at the time of the attack, allegations surfaced that his driver was assaulted during the commotion.

Mitra blamed BJP-backed miscreants for the incident, alleging that the attack had been planned. However, local residents claimed that discontent had been brewing in the area for some time.
The protest reportedly began outside the residence of a councillor from Ward No 14 in Kamarhati, where auto-rickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers gathered to demand the return of money allegedly paid as “cut money” over the years. Demonstrators accused local leaders of collecting illegal payments and sought accountability following the change in political power in the state.
EGGS BEING A SYMBOL OF DISSENT TARGETING TMC
The incident is the latest in a series of protests targeting TMC leaders in the weeks following the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Last week, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee faced protests during a visit to Sonarpur, where he had gone to meet the family of a deceased party worker. Protesters allegedly raised slogans against him and threw eggs and stones, forcing security personnel to escort him away from the area.
In recent days, similar scenes have played out across several parts of West Bengal, with local residents staging demonstrations outside police stations and court complexes following the arrest of TMC leaders and councillors in cases involving allegations of extortion, corruption and other offences.
Eggs have increasingly become a symbol of public protest against leaders linked to such controversies. Similar incidents were reported during the court appearances of arrested TMC leader Jay Prakash Majumdar and former minister Swaroop Biswas, where protesters gathered carrying eggs and raising slogans demanding accountability.
The latest attack on Madan Mitra’s vehicle underscores the growing public anger confronting sections of the TMC leadership as the party navigates a turbulent post-election period.
