The proposed naming of the Mamnoor airport in Telangana’s Warangal has triggered a fresh debate over the state’s Kakatiya legacy, after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy invited public suggestions for the airport’s name.
Names linked to the medieval Kakatiya dynasty, including Kakatiya, Rani Rudrama Devi, Prataparudra and Orugallu, have emerged prominently, with Rani Rudrama Devi reportedly among the names being considered. However, no final name has been officially announced.

KAKATIYA SYMBOLISM DEBATE
The naming exercise has gained political significance because of Reddy’s earlier position on Kakatiya symbolism. While discussing the redesign of Telangana’s official emblem two years ago, the Chief Minister had said the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam would not be retained.
He described the Thoranam as a “symbol of anarchy” and argued that the state’s official identity should instead represent the Telangana movement, its struggles and sacrifices.
The airport debate has now brought that earlier position back into focus, as the government considers associating a major public institution in Warangal with the very historical legacy that had figured prominently in the emblem controversy.
CHORUS FOR VARIOUS NAMES
Several names have been suggested for the proposed airport. Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who hails from Warangal, has publicly supported Rudrama International Airport or Kakatiya International Airport.
Other names in circulation include Sammakka-Saralamma and former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao.
Among the Kakatiya-era choices, Rudrama Devi has emerged as one of the strongest suggestions in the current discussion, although the formal approval process is yet to conclude.
Warangal, historically known as Orugallu, was the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty and remains closely associated with its rulers. Rudra Deva, Ganapatideva, Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra are among the prominent figures linked to the city’s medieval history.
The region’s Kakatiya heritage continues to have a strong cultural presence, making the proposed airport’s name particularly significant.
The reference to “Rudra Dev” has added another dimension to the discussion.
WHO WAS RUDRA DEV?
Rudra Deva was a Kakatiya ruler, while Reddy has reportedly used “Rudra Dev” as the name of his grandson, whose reported official name is Reyansh.
There is, however, no official indication that the government has proposed naming the airport after the Chief Minister’s grandson. The reported proposal under discussion is centred on Rani Rudrama Devi.
The coincidence has nevertheless become part of the wider political conversation, especially in the context of Reddy’s earlier comments on Kakatiya imagery.
The Chief Minister has subsequently maintained that his government respects Telangana’s historical symbols, while stressing that official symbols should reflect the statehood movement and the sacrifices associated with it.
The airport naming issue differs from the emblem controversy in an important respect.
While the emblem was intended to determine symbols representing the state as a whole, the Mamnoor airport is being viewed in the context of Warangal’s own historical and cultural identity.
Discussions around the proposed airport have also included the possibility of incorporating Kakatiya architectural and cultural motifs.
For now, the government’s public consultation has opened the field to multiple possibilities, but no final decision has been announced.
The eventual choice will determine how a major infrastructure project in Warangal is presented in relation to the region’s history, with the Kakatiya legacy likely to remain central to the debate.
