Two e-bike models sold across Australia have been recalled over fears the frame could break while in use – possibly leading to serious injury or even death.
The Optima Asphalt and Comfort bikes from Spanish bicycle manufacturer Orbea were assessed to have “risk of death, serious injury or property damage (including to other road users) if the bike’s frame breaks while in use and causes an accident”.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warned users to stop using the bikes and check the Vehicle Identification Number.
“If the bike’s VIN contains SNKIN19A, contact your nearest ORBEA dear to arrange for a free replacement,” the recall notice says.
The e-bikes were sold between 1 October 2019 to 31 December 2020 in both online and physical stores across every state besides the Northern Territory.
The ACCC cited “a fault in the bike’s frame welding (which) may cause the frame to break while in use”.
Recall instructions match the bicycle company’s commitment to a “lifetime warranty” on its models.
“Orbea stands behind its frames with a lifetime warranty for the original owner, reflecting the brand’s confidence in its engineering and build quality,” a statement on Electric Bikes Brisbane’s description on Orbea’s products.
