Robbie Williams has become “addicted” to buying clothes since giving up alcohol and drugs.
The Take That star spent years struggling with substance abuse issues before finally getting clean around 2007 and he’s since swapped his addictions for a new obsession with fashion but he’s convinced his new fixation is much “healthier” and won’t get him “into trouble” with his wife Ayda Field.
He told The Sunday Times newspaper: ” “If you’d asked me 25 years ago: ‘Do you like fashion?’, I’d have said: ‘I can’t stand it. I find it pretentious and silly’.
“Well, now I am pretentious and silly, so I’m into it. I guess my addiction has changed from coke, ecstasy, vodka and lager to clothes, which is healthier and won’t get me into trouble with my wife, Ayda … Fashion actually means something to me now. It was an accident before, now I’m doing it on purpose.”
Robbie went on to admit he has fallen out with Ayda over his fashion choices after she forced him to throw out all his old pairs of jeans and they have since come back into style.
He added: “[I love] gaggy and bootcut jeans. I love the shape and they feel like me. In the Noughties they were outlawed and everything got tight.
“My wife had an intervention and I had to throw out all my Nineties jeans and there was a period of instant grief, but in the past five years they’ve come back.
“If I go into a shop and there are baggier boyfriend jeans, I’m stocking up on them and making a promise to myself that if fashion changes and goes back to being tight, we’re not changing. This is who we are.”
However, there is one item in his wardrobe that he has vowed never to get rid of – the “bondage trousers” he used to wear when he was out partying back in the 1990s as well as a pair of Balmain shoes that give him a height boost.
He said: “I recently found a pair of red Vivienne Westwood bondage trousers and a Vivienne Westwood gingham high-collared shirt that I used to wear in 1994 to go raving in.
“They’re staying. It’s a time capsule of who I was. Those clothes represent the best of my going-out years before the wheels fell off …
“And I’ve got these Balmain shoes on, with grey plastic piping, which I call my ‘insecure shoes’. I’m 6ft 1in, but in these shoes I’m 6ft 3in and I like being taller. I feel powerful.”
