Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman is leading a delegation to Iran’s capital Tehran on Monday, October 26, alongside officials from other countries party to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, for talks with Iranian officials amid efforts to ease regional tensions.
In a post on X, Saudi Ambassador Dr Rayed Krimly said the delegation would meet Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organisation Director Ibrahim Kalin are participating in the discussions. Iran’s delegation will be led by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
He said the visit was part of continued efforts by the agreement’s member countries to de-escalate the ongoing crisis, promote dialogue and pursue diplomatic solutions. He added that the initiative supported mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan and aimed to strengthen regional security and stability.
The meeting marks the first high-level engagement between Iran and all three members of the bloc since Saudi Arabia faced escalating attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei called the talks a “key development in shaping regional diplomacy”.
“This quadrilateral meeting, the result of diplomatic initiatives and the agreement of the Islamic Republic of Iran, serves as a practical step towards deliberation and co-operation on regional security mechanisms, grounded in shared interests,” he told Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
Qatari media reported that a delegation from the country arrived in Tehran on Sunday, October 25.
The talks come amid renewed threats from the United States and Iran, fuelling concerns about a possible return to hostilities.
