Seth Green would love to return to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The 52-year-old actor played Oz in the fantasy TV series from 1997 until 2000 and while he was never in talks to reprise the role in the now-axed planned reboot of the show, he would be open to playing the role again.
Speaking on The McBride Rewind podcast, he said: “I was not part of those talks…
“If they wrote an Oz story, I’d love to see where Oz is right now.”
Seth – who noted lead star Sarah Michelle Gellar had invited him to participate in an early reading for executives – hopes the Buffy reboot will eventually “figure out a path forward” and still get made.
He said: “It’s clear to see that there’s an opportunity for that show, that there’s a big audience for something that could work. It’s silly to throw the baby out with the bathwater just because your pilot didn’t come in the way you like. It’s okay to do a little extra development to get what you like.”
Seth joined Buffy in the second season in a recurring role as Oz, appearing in 10 episodes, before becoming a main cast member for the third season and leaving midway through the fourth, as well as playing the teen-turned-werewolf in one episode of spin-off Angel.
And he admitted showrunner Joss Whedon “didn’t tell [him] until several episodes in” that he wanted him to become a regular.
He recalled: “He was like, ‘I have this plan that Oz is a werewolf and this is what I’m thinking.’ And I was like, ‘All right, that sounds cool.'”
But the Austin Powers star’s abrupt exit came at a time when he received offers to appear in two different movies and those who worked on the show were renegotiating their salaries because they were “almost criminally underpaid for the work we were doing”.
He explained: “So I said, ‘I’m not trying to leave this show. But I did 22 episodes last season and you have a cast of like nine regulars, and inarguably none of the stuff we talked about my character doing happened over the last season because we’re telling this principal story.’…
“I play my part, but Oz is always like a guest star, right? He’s not in every episode.”
Seth claimed the cast worked over 12 hours a day so he had “no time in my day to do anything else” and while he suggested missing a few episodes to take on the other projects, the production team “weren’t going to make that deal.”
He recalled telling Whedon: “I want to be here. I want to play this part. I love this role. I can’t believe that I get to do it, but I really want to make these movies. And we’re talking about like six episodes out of 22. Let my character go on tour. Like, that makes sense.”
