There are few cars that have pulled at the heartstrings of enthusiasts while being commercial successes, and one of them was the Polo. Every single college kid wanted one, I know I did, but still ended up choosing a sub-4m SUV for its practical upgrade over the hot hatch, and that is perhaps the same kind of thought process that people in the VW boardroom discussed, and implemented. Enter the Skoda Kylaq, the most affordable car in the Skoda Auto Volkswagen umbrella, and this is a car that makes sense in the segment it competes in, while ticking many of the boxes that the successor to the Polo should. It looks good, genuinely good.

While Skoda’s have been edgier, the Kylaq has some curves to it, the bonnet droops down at the nose, creating the butterfly grille and is flanked by very neat LED DRLs. The headlamps are placed below, and this is somehow one of the only cars with a split headlamp setup that doesn’t look odd. The SUV has clean lines, but with a tall hatch shape, rather than butch proportions. The rear, however, is a bit disappointing; the simplistic LED taillamps look plain. Kylaq doesn’t even try to be muscular, it has those lean muscles thanks to Skoda’s clever design language and it looks great, especially in the Lava Blue that our long-term test car comes in.
The interiors are great too, slightly new for Skoda and something that has been replicated in updates for other models, the new steering, the layered dashboard, the infotainment are new. Features are plenty, including ventilated seats, both front seats with powered adjust, a sunroof, wireless charger, and wireless smartphone pairing. But what really pulls the customers to Skoda is the engineering behind the chassis, and the powertrain, and our test car has got the best version, the manual. The 1.0 TSI is an impressive motor, and has been used in the Slavia as well as the Kushaq, and for the smaller Kylaq, the numbers on paper are more than enough, and undoubtedly, it is spirited, and one of the most enthusiastic yet refined motors in the segment. The Kylaq is perhaps the most dynamic car in its segment, the chassis is beautiful, the steering direct, and it only has a couple of rivals to match up to, but what we really look forward to is the practical and daily-driving experience.
