Sydney teen’s hand almost amputated in alleged knife attack

A Sydney teenager’s hand was nearly chopped off in an inner-city car park on Wednesday night in a savage attack allegedly orchestrated by a child who was out on bail at the time.

Officers discovered the injured 17-year-old on Redfern Oval about 6pm on Wednesday with his hand barely attached to his wrist, police said.

The near-complete amputation allegedly occurred in a car park on Morehead Street, two blocks from the football ground. Police were told the offender used a knife to hack at the teen’s hand before escaping.

Paramedics transported the 17-year-old to hospital in a stable condition. Surgeons are now working to reattach his hand.

Bloody rags and sporting equipment were discovered on the sidelines of Redfern Oval, leading police to cordon off the ground while children rode bikes on the basketball court beside the field. A cone used for sporting drills was splashed with smears of blood, while blood was also visible on the concrete pavers leading to the ground.

Tactical police swarmed the Morehead Street car park following the attack, as detectives combed the property for evidence. Police were also seen speaking to staff members in the lobby of the building on Thursday evening.

Their investigation led them to a car travelling along Redfern Street – the road at Redfern Oval’s northern edge – just after midnight, where they arrested a 15-year-old boy.

The child was taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with wounding another person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and breaching his bail.

He spent the night behind bars ahead of an appearance in children’s court on Thursday.
