Maruti Suzuki Dzire has emerged as India’s best-selling car in July 2026, overtaking the WagonR and reaffirming the sedan’s stronghold in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs.

Maruti Suzuki continued its strong run in the Indian passenger vehicle market in July 2026, with the Dzire topping the monthly sales charts. The compact sedan recorded sales of 23,791 units, narrowly beating the WagonR to claim the top position. Maruti Suzuki also occupied six of the top 10 spots on the list of India’s best-selling cars for the month.

The Dzire’s July performance is particularly significant as it comes despite the growing popularity of SUVs and compact SUVs in India. Its ability to consistently rank among the country’s highest-selling cars highlights the continued demand for sedans that offer practicality, fuel efficiency and relatively low ownership costs.

The Dzire had finished third on the sales chart in June 2026 with 17,899 units, behind the Tata Punch and Tata Nexon. A month earlier, in May, it had topped the sales chart with 24,546 units, making July its second No. 1 finish in just three months.

The sedan’s strong performance also builds on its longer-term success. During FY2026, the Dzire emerged as India’s best-selling car, recording cumulative sales of around 2.3 lakh units.

Fuel efficiency remains a key strength

One of the biggest reasons behind the Dzire’s popularity is its fuel efficiency. The latest-generation model is powered by Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine, which produces its best efficiency figures when paired with the AMT gearbox.

The Dzire delivers a claimed 24.79kmpl with the manual gearbox and 25.71kmpl with the five-speed AMT. Buyers looking to further reduce running costs can opt for the factory-fitted CNG version, which has a claimed efficiency of 33.73km/kg.

These figures make the Dzire particularly attractive to daily commuters, families and fleet operators, where fuel costs can have a significant impact on overall ownership expenses.

Competitive pricing and practical package

The Dzire is also positioned as an affordable entry point into the sedan segment. Its sub-four-metre dimensions allow it to benefit from lower taxation, helping Maruti Suzuki maintain a competitive price while offering a relatively spacious cabin and usable boot.

The factory-fitted CNG option is available in the VXi and ZXi trims, further strengthening the Dzire’s appeal among buyers prioritising running costs.

The latest-generation Dzire also gets a more contemporary design, featuring a redesigned grille, LED headlamps and updated styling. Inside, the sedan offers features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, electric sunroof, automatic climate control and a more premium cabin.

Five-star safety rating adds to its appeal

Safety has also become a major selling point for the latest Dzire. The sedan has received a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, making it one of the highest-rated cars in its segment.

Its safety equipment includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control, hill-hold assist and rear parking sensors. The improved crash protection has helped address one of the key concerns traditionally associated with affordable compact cars.

Strong fleet demand adds another layer

The Dzire’s popularity is not limited to private buyers. Its commercial version, the Dzire Tour S, has become a popular choice among taxi and fleet operators, largely due to its fuel efficiency, low maintenance costs and availability with a factory-fitted CNG powertrain.

This combination of private and commercial demand gives the Dzire an advantage over several passenger cars that primarily depend on individual buyers for their volumes.

Maruti’s service network and resale value

Maruti Suzuki’s extensive after-sales network is another factor working in the Dzire’s favour. With over 30 lakh Dzires already on Indian roads, owners have access to a widespread network of service centres, readily available spare parts and relatively affordable maintenance.

The Dzire also enjoys strong demand in the used-car market, supporting its resale value and helping reduce the overall cost of ownership.

With SUVs continuing to dominate consumer attention, the Dzire’s July 2026 sales performance is a reminder that the sedan is far from irrelevant in India. Its combination of fuel efficiency, affordability, practicality, safety, fleet demand and strong resale value continues to make it a compelling package — and has now helped it reclaim the top spot on the monthly sales chart.
