Actor Tom Cruise has announced the sequel to Days of Thunder, revealing that Anne Hathaway will join him in the much-awaited follow-up to the 1990 racing drama. The sequel, which comes 38 years after the original film, is set to hit theatres in summer 2028.
Cruise shared the announcement on social media on August 29, posting a picture from Daytona International Speedway and confirming Hathaway’s involvement in the film. The announcement also revealed the sequel’s summer 2028 release window.

In the video, a pregnant Hathaway says, “I’m going to have this baby, and then we’re going to make this movie.”
Cruise is expected to reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, the character he played in the original Days of Thunder. Hathaway, meanwhile, will reportedly portray a team owner and engineer, marking her entry into the high-speed racing world of the franchise.
Jonathan Levine will direct the sequel, with Jerry Bruckheimer, Tommy Harper and Cruise attached as producers.
The announcement came fittingly on the day of the 2026 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, a racetrack that holds a significant place in the Days of Thunder story and features prominently in the original film.
The original Days of Thunder, released in 1990, starred Cruise as Cole Trickle and followed his journey as a talented but ambitious NASCAR driver. With Cruise returning and Hathaway joining the cast, the sequel marks the revival of the racing franchise nearly four decades after its first outing.
