Travis Kelce has defended his beer “chugging” and seemingly falling asleep during a date night with Taylor Swift.
The Kansas City Chiefs player took his pop star fiance to the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday (23.05.26) to watch a basketball game – the NBA Eastern Conference Final between the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers – and during the event Travis was seen downing a can of beer in one gulp as well and was later seen looking as if he had nodded off. However, Travis has now explained his antics and insisted it was all part of the fun of watching his favourite team.
During an appearance on his New Heights podcast, the sportsman’s brother Jason Kelce joked Travis was a “role model” by throwing back a beer as he appeared on the Jumbotron screen and Travis defended his actions, saying: “It was a classy chug, Jason. All right? Didn’t spill one drop.
“Didn’t crush the can. I’m on the hardwood floor at an NBA game, it could’ve got messy. It was a smooth, classy chug to get the people going. We’re down f****** 10 points, trying to get some type of energy going in the building.”
When asked if he’d actually fallen asleep during the game, Travis insisted he’d just slumped over and closed his eyes in mock defeat as his team struggled.
He explained: “The Knicks f****** couldn’t miss a goddamn shot in the fourth quarter. I’m just sitting there like: ‘Come on’.”
Travis’ team lost 121-108 to the Knicks, but the sports star insisted he had a great time because he enjoys sharing his love of sport with his bride-to-be.
He said: “Getting Tay back to Cleveland and showing her my roots is always something I love doing. This wasn’t me trying to persuade Taylor into being a Cleveland sports fan with me.
“This was me just having a fun date night, knowing I love going to basketball games. We actually tried to go to a game in New York, but I was stuck in Kansas City. I love bringing her into the sports world that I appreciate.”
Travis also addressed the taunting posts on social media posts which have been sharing pictures of Taylor wearing a Knicks jersey in the past.
He said: “Not a lot of teams have been able to get Taylor to wear a jersey, I’ll say that. The Knicks did. It’s hilarious.
“Obviously, Tay’s got a lot of New York ties. When it came down to going to the Cav’s game, she was kind of like: ‘Nice, they’re playing the Knicks. Sweet, I’ve seen them play before’.”
