US President Donald Trump was secretly moved from the plane he was publicly believed to be travelling on to another military aircraft during his Turkey visit in July, in a security ruse that left much of the travelling press corps in the dark. Now, Netflix is turning the unusual operation into a documentary. Instadocs: The Decoy Plane will revisit the secret plane switch, the decoy aircraft and a potential Iranian threat behind the operation when it premieres on September 4.

The documentary, helmed by showrunner Steve Yaccino, will revisit the July 8 incident in a limited series. Netflix said the film will feature first-hand accounts from journalists who were part of the presidential travelling press corps, including The Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe, who was among those who first reported on the incident.
According to a report in The Washington Post, Trump was quietly moved out of Turkey aboard a military aircraft amid security concerns linked to a potential Iranian threat. The aircraft, publicly identified as Air Force One, was instead used as a decoy, helping conceal the president’s actual movements.
How did Trump switch planes?
The operation was carried out amid security concerns during Trump’s trip to Turkey for a NATO summit. According to reports, Trump was transferred to the military aircraft in a catering truck typically used on airport tarmacs to transport food and beverages to planes.
The White House had initially indicated that Trump was travelling aboard the Qatar-gifted Air Force One. He was flown from Turkey to the Royal Air Force Mildenhall base in Suffolk, England, where he is believed to have switched back to the Qatari Boeing 747 before continuing his journey to Joint Base Andrews near Washington, DC.
Only a small group of people accompanied Trump during the secret transfer, including White House aide Natalie Harp and then-Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Other senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, adviser Stephen Miller and then-White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, remained on the aircraft that effectively became the decoy plane.
When the story broke, it left both the public and the press baffled, triggering a wave of viral videos, memes and speculation as people tried to piece together what had actually happened.
Trump later addressed the unusual arrangement, saying he had followed the instructions of the Secret Service and the military. “They wanted me to go on a different plane,” he told reporters at Joint Base Andrews on August 11, adding that he complied because they believed it was the safer option.

Netflix described Instadocs as a documentary series designed to move “at the speed of the story”, with episodes arriving while the subject remains part of the public conversation. The Decoy Plane follows earlier instalments focused on the Alex Murdaugh case and prediction markets.
The documentary will also feature interviews with journalists and former security and aviation personnel, including Reuters White House reporter Gram Slattery, Associated Press photographer Alex Brandon, MSNBC investigative reporter Carol Leonnig, former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald and former Air Force One crew member Wanda Joell.
Instadocs: The Decoy Plane will be available to stream on Netflix from September 4.
