Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday reiterated that he had not made any double-meaning remark concerning Kollywood actor Trisha, two weeks after the controversy led to his brief arrest and questioning.

Udhayanidhi said he had merely remarked that “water should flow in the Cauvery” while addressing a protest in support of farmers in Thanjavur. He maintained that he had neither named Trisha nor made any objectionable reference to her.

The remark had triggered a political storm after it was interpreted as a double entendre involving the actor.

Speaking at a DMK event, Udhayanidhi recalled the events of August 2, when Tamil Nadu Police arrived at his Chennai residence and took him to Thanjavur for questioning.

UDHAYANIDHI RECALLS POLICE VISIT

Udhayanidhi said he initially thought the police had come over the sharp political remarks he had made during the protest.

“At 8 am, the police came to my house. I was reading the newspaper and watching television when my assistant told me, ‘The police have come from Thanjavur.’ I thought, ‘Okay, they have come to arrest me,’” he said.

The DMK leader said he immediately began recalling his speech from the previous day to understand what could have prompted the police action.

“I had called him a ‘dummy Chief Minister’, described his government as shameless and accused it of abandoning farmers. But the police did not react to any of that,” Udhayanidhi said.

Denying that his remark carried any double meaning concerning Trisha, he added, “I only said that water should flow into the Cauvery. Nothing else crossed my mind.”

DMK LEADER ATTACKS VIJAY GOVERNMENT

Udhayanidhi also targeted the Vijay-led TVK government, accusing it of arresting people on flimsy grounds.

“Arrested for standing, arrested for walking, arrested for speaking, arrested for posting on social media. This government is operating like a terrible fascist government. It is deeply insecure,” he said.

Taking a swipe at the government, Udhayanidhi quipped that lawyers had been particularly busy since the TVK came to power.

“You, the legal team, have been very, very busy. Most of you know why you are so busy,” he said, again describing the Vijay government as “fascist.”

UDHAYANIDHI MOCKS TVK MLAs

The Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly also mocked the ruling TVK, calling all its MLAs “jokers”.

“A deck of cards usually has only one or two jokers. But in this group that came to power through corrupt means, all of them are jokers,” he said.

Udhayanidhi claimed that most people did not know the names of the TVK legislators or the portfolios held by its ministers.

“We do not even know who is a minister and who is an MLA. Do the people of Tamil Nadu know? Nobody does. Even if I mention their real names, you will not recognise them. People know them only by their nicknames,” he said.
