Hyderabad: Some films work best when they embrace their own madness. Udta Teer delivers precisely that kind of carefree entertainment, with an unusual plot, cheeky political humour and a surprise package in Rahul Bose. While its occasional shift towards serious drama interrupts the fun, there is enough here to make it worth a watch.

Rahul Bose is the biggest surprise

Keeping Rahul Bose’s track out of the trailer was a smart decision. His appearance brings some of the film’s funniest moments, with his facial expressions doing much of the heavy lifting. There is a reason for that, but revealing it would spoil the fun. It is a track best discovered in the theatre.

The film also lands several sly digs at Pakistan’s economic troubles and military establishment. One particularly funny scene sees Ram Kapoor’s high-ranking officer smash an expensive plate in frustration, only to find himself being served on a thermocol plate later. It is a simple visual gag that lands without needing an explanation.

The generals’ dismissive attitude towards the prime minister adds to the satire, turning the imbalance of power into a running source of humour.

When the film gets serious

For all its comic strengths, Udta Teer does not quite trust itself to remain a parody. The shift towards seriousness slows down a film that is otherwise at its most entertaining when it lets loose.

Sara’s track feels like a speed breaker and brings to mind Yalina’s storyline in Dhurandhar. The emotional detour does not work as well as the comedy surrounding it. The songs, too, feel unnecessary and interrupt the momentum.

The final twist, however, is cleverly handled. Without giving anything away, it reframes what comes before it and appears designed to head off accusations of an anti-India narrative. Whether the film needed that reassurance is debatable, but the reveal itself works.

The verdict

Udta Teer offers something that has felt rare lately: a chance to sit back and enjoy a film’s sheer silliness. A stronger commitment to parody and fewer emotional interruptions would have made it sharper. Even so, Rahul Bose’s surprise track, the cheeky humour and the unusual premise make this an entertaining watch.
