The United States on Saturday deported dozens of people to the Central African Republic, including an Afghan man in his early twenties who had been granted protection against deportation to Afghanistan by a US judge, according to his lawyer and an advocacy group.
The flight landed in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. It included 12 Afghans, eight Iranians, and several people from Nepal and Nicaragua, said Savi Arvey, director of policy, refugee and immigrant rights at Human Rights First.

The Afghan man had been protected from deportation to Afghanistan because of fears that he could face persecution from the Taliban, his lawyer Alma David said. Court documents seen by The Associated Press said his family in Afghanistan had received threats from the Taliban because of the work done by his brothers in support of the US military.
David said one of his brothers lives in the United States and had served in the Afghan National Army, which worked with the US military before the Taliban took power in 2021. She added that another brother had been trained by the US as a pilot and was later killed by the Taliban.
Advocates said the Trump administration has, under a series of often secret agreements, deported thousands of people to about two dozen countries that are not their own as part of its immigration crackdown. Immigration lawyers said the practice is being used as a legal loophole to indirectly send some asylum seekers back towards countries they had fled.
Saturday’s flight was the second deportation flight to the Central African Republic since June. The earlier flight had carried two dozen migrants, including an Iranian woman who was facing persecution in her home country.
The deportation to the Central African Republic has drawn attention because it included people sent to a country that is not their own, among them an Afghan man whose family had allegedly been threatened by the Taliban because of links to the US military.
