The Varanasi airport firing on Sunday has brought an unusual travel question into focus. ‘Can you carry a gun on a flight in India?’ The answer is yes, but only under specific conditions. A passenger with an authorised and licenced firearm can transport it by air after completing the required declaration and security procedures.
The weapon must be handled as restricted baggage and cannot simply be placed inside a cabin bag. Airlines also require passengers to follow their own firearm and ammunition procedures.

WHAT HAPPENED AT VARANASI AIRPORT?
A passenger travelling from Varanasi to Mumbai on an Air India Express flight was carrying a pistol and magazine and had declared the weapon before boarding.
During a routine check of the firearm and its documents at the airport, the gun went off. The bullet first hit the ground before injuring two airport security screeners.
A woman staffer suffered an injury to her thigh, while a male staffer was injured in his hand. Both were taken to hospital and were reported to be stable. The exact circumstances of the firing are under investigation.
HOW CAN YOU CARRY A GUN ON A FLIGHT?
Passengers cannot carry a firearm in their hand baggage. Authorised firearms and ammunition have to be declared before the security check and handled according to the applicable aviation and airline procedures. Air India, for instance, states that passengers must declare licenced weapons and ammunition before the security check of their registered baggage.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation also has a specific approval framework for the carriage of arms, ammunition and related items on aircraft within, to or from India.
WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED?
A passenger carrying a firearm must have the required licence and supporting documents. The airline and airport authorities can verify these documents before accepting the weapon.
Simply owning a gun is not enough. The firearm must be legally authorised, and the passenger must comply with the applicable conditions for transporting it by air.
CAN YOU KEEP THE GUN IN CABIN BAGGAGE?
No. Firearms are prohibited in cabin baggage. Airports list firearms, ammunition and several related items among prohibited articles for passenger cabin baggage.
The firearm must instead be processed through the prescribed checked-baggage procedure and security checks.
WHAT ABOUT AMMUNITION?
Ammunition is also subject to strict rules and cannot be carried casually in a passenger’s cabin bag. The quantity and conditions can depend on the applicable aviation rules, the purpose of travel and the airline’s policy.
For example, DGCA rules have provisions for licenced firearms and ammunition, while special provisions have also been made for sport shooters travelling for competitions or training.
SO, CAN YOU TAKE YOUR LICENCED GUN ON A FLIGHT?
Yes, but not like ordinary luggage. A licenced firearm can be transported on a domestic flight only after meeting the required legal, security and airline conditions. It must be declared, properly processed and kept out of the passenger cabin.
The Varanasi airport firing also shows why these checks matter. Even when a weapon is legally declared, it’s handling during verification requires extreme care.
Passengers carrying firearms should therefore follow the airline’s latest instructions and declare the weapon before security screening rather than arriving at the airport with it packed like regular baggage.
