Heading back to school on Monday is an exciting time for Hugh Rosagro, who can’t wait to catch up with friends he hasn’t seen for two weeks and check that his class axolotls got fed over the holidays.

For his older sister Amelia, the first day of Term 4 is especially sweet — she’s allowed to turn up with chocolate Smarties to share with her classmates so they can all celebrate her birthday week, after she turned nine on Sunday.

Like the Karrinyup Primary siblings, most young students across WA are back to school Monday for the final term of 2026.

Missing will be Year 12 students, who are either already finished for the year or in preparation mode for ATAR exams, which commence later this month.

For Hugh and Amelia’s mum Bree, a lawyer who is also P&C president at Karrinyup Primary, school brings an immediate return to routines like lunchboxes and being “taxi driver for all their after-school activities”.

Hugh had mixed emotions when reminded this will be the last term in his Year 2 classroom.

“A bit sad,” he admitted.

“But I’m excited for Year 3 because I’m really good at cross country, and you get to go to interschool if you come in the top tour for cross country when you are in Year 3.”
