A 25-year-old married woman was found hanging inside her room under suspicious circumstances in Lucknow’s Sarojininagar area, police said on Friday. While police are investigating the case, the woman’s family has accused her in-laws of murdering her over dowry demands and staging the incident as a suicide.

The victim has been identified as Nishu Rajput, daughter of the late Rakesh Rajput and a resident of Bijnor. She was married to Pawan Rajput, also known as Golu, a resident of Piparsad village in Lucknow’s Sarojininagar, in 2019. The couple had two daughters.

According to the preliminary investigation, the incident came to light on Friday afternoon when Nishu was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a locked room at her residence.

At the time of the incident, her husband was reportedly not at home.

After returning, he found the room locked from the inside and received no response despite repeated calls. On looking through a window, he allegedly saw Nishu hanging from a drape tied to the fan hook.

The family immediately informed the police. A team reached the spot, broke open the door and brought the woman down, but it was too late as she had already died.

Nishu’s brother, Ankit, has made serious allegations against her husband and in-laws. He claimed that his sister had been facing harassment for a dowry demand of Rs 5 lakh.

According to him, the in-laws killed Nishu and later hanged her body to make it appear as a case of suicide. Ankit said he received a phone call from his brother-in-law around 2 pm informing him that Nishu had hanged herself.

However, when he reached the Sarojininagar Community Health Centre, he found that she was already dead. Police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Officials said the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received.

The investigation is underway, and police are examining all aspects of the case, including the allegations of dowry harassment and murder as well as the possibility of suicide.

Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
