A child has died and an elderly woman has been seriously injured in a house fire in the Lake Macquarie region of NSW.
The horror unfolded about 1.30pm when a property in Northcote Ave, Swansea, was engulfed in flames.
A woman in her 80s and two young children were inside the property at the time.
By the time emergency services arrived at the scene, the house was well lit.
One of the children was located during a search of the home and was unable to be revived, NSW Police said in a statement.
Miraculously, the other child was understood not to have been injured and was able to escape the property.
The elderly woman suffered serious burns and has been taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
A spokesman for NSW Police also confirmed a teenage boy who attempted to gain access to the home also had to be taken to hospital after suffering leg injuries.
Firefighters remain on the scene while a series of road closures are in place in the surrounding areas.
The approximate age of the young victim is yet to be confirmed.
