A young person has been handed an official warning over online threats made to the prime minister of India.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed officers had spoken to an individual after a series of threats were made to Indian leader Narendra Modi.

It comes in the days leading up to the world leader making a state visit to Australia, where he is due to meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne.

An AFP spokesman said the force had identified the person responsible for an online threat and spoke to them on July 3.

“Following an assessment of the matter, the young person was issued a formal warning,” they said.

“There is no current or impending risk to the community.”

Mr Modi, who has been prime minister of India for 12 years, will land in Melbourne on an official visit later this week.

He is scheduled to attend an annual leader’s summit with Mr Albanese and appear at a community event at Marvel Stadium.

“The Australia-India relationship has never been more consequential, and our partnership fosters peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” Mr Albanese said.

“I look forward to strengthening Australia and India’s deep partnership.”
