A young woman has been killed and a second is fighting for her life following a horror crash that left a car sliced in half.
On Tuesday evening, emergency services were called to a chaotic scene in one of Adelaide’s coastal suburbs after a Nissan station wagon collided with a Subaru sedan.It happened at a notorious junction in Hallett Cove, the intersection of Barramundi Drive and Lonsdale Rd about 10pm on Tuesday.
Three women aged in their 20s were travelling in the Nissan, while a 27-year-old man was behind the wheel of the Subaru.
One of the Nissan passengers, a 21-year-old from Hallett Cove, died at the scene, while a second passenger, 20, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
The 21-year-old driver, from Morphett Vale, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
The devastating scene brought neighbours out onto the street, with the impact creating a loud bang.
“I was watching TV and all of a sudden there was this big bang. It is so sad,” Roger Hand, 77, told The Advertiser.
Another neighbour, Kevin Schwartz, told The Advertiser the intersection was notorious for road traffic incidents.
“There’s a lot of prangs because they try to beat cars doing 80 while going across,” he said.
The woman’s death is the 73rd life lost on South Australian roads in 2026, the heartbreaking equivalent of one person every three days.
